Laptop spec sheets are full of numbers that do not mean much unless you know what to look for. Here are the nine things actually worth checking before you buy, whether new or refurbished.
1. Processor
Look for a recent-generation Intel Core i5/i7 or AMD Ryzen 5/7. The generation number matters as much as the model number — an older-generation i7 can be slower than a newer i5.
2. RAM
8GB is the bare minimum for everyday use in 2026; 16GB is a safer bet if you multitask, use a browser heavily, or want the laptop to stay comfortable for a few years.
3. Storage
Insist on an SSD, not a traditional hard drive — it is the single biggest factor in how snappy a laptop feels day to day. 512GB is a comfortable amount for most people.
4. Display
Full HD (1920×1080) or higher is worth insisting on. An IPS panel gives much better colour and viewing angles than the cheaper TN panels still found on some budget models.
5. Battery
Look for 45Wh or more if you want realistic all-day use away from a charger. Marketed battery life figures are usually optimistic, so treat them as a best-case number.
6. Weight and build
Under 1.8kg is comfortable to carry regularly. Metal chassis tend to be more durable than plastic, particularly around the hinges.
7. Ports
Check for USB-C, at least one USB-A (for older accessories), HDMI, and a headphone jack. Some ultra-thin laptops drop these in favour of USB-C only, which can mean carrying adapters everywhere.
8. Graphics
Integrated graphics are fine for browsing, office work and video calls. If you plan to game or edit video and photos seriously, look for a dedicated graphics card instead.
9. Upgrade options
Some laptops let you add RAM or swap the SSD later; increasingly, many do not. If future-proofing matters to you, check this before buying rather than assuming it is possible.
New not the only option
