Service your Computer

Servicing your computer involves both physical maintenance to prevent hardware failure and digital cleanup to ensure peak performance. Depending on your environment, you should perform a basic service every 3–6 months, with a deep clean at least once a year.

Essential DIY Service Tasks

If you are comfortable doing it yourself, follow these standard maintenance steps:

Physical Cleaning:

  • External: Wipe down the case and screen with a microfiber cloth. Use compressed air for ports and vents.

  • Internal: Power off and unplug the PC. Use compressed air to blow dust out of fans and heat sinks. Hold fans still to prevent them from spinning too fast and damaging the motor.

Digital Optimization:

  • Disk Cleanup: Use built-in tools like “Disk Cleanup” (Windows) to remove temporary files and empty the recycle bin.

  • Security: Run a full malware scan and ensure your operating system and drivers are fully updated.

  • Performance: Uninstall unused programs and disable unnecessary startup applications to speed up boot times
