A spilled brew or glass of water does not have to mean the end of your laptop. What you do in the first 60 seconds determines whether your computer survives.
Step 1: Force Immediate Shutdown
Do not waste time saving your work or shutting down through Windows.
- Hold the power button down hard for 5–10 seconds.
- Release only when the lights go completely black.
Step 2: Unplug Everything
- Pull out the power cable instantly.
- Remove USB drives, mice, and dongles.
Step 3: Flip and Drain (The Tent Position)
- Open the laptop screen as wide as it goes.
- Turn it upside down like an upside-down ‘V’ (a tent).
- Place it on a towel to let gravity pull liquid away from the motherboard.
What NOT to Do:
- Do NOT use rice: Rice dust gets inside the ports and creates a sticky, corrosive paste.
- Do NOT use a hairdryer: This melts the keys and pushes liquid deeper into the machine.
- Do NOT turn it back on: Even if it looks dry, moisture inside will cause a short circuit the moment power runs through it.
Next Step: Leave the laptop off for at least 24–48 hours. For peace of mind, bring it in for an internal chemical clean to stop long-term corrosion.
