If your iPad apps stopped working after an iOS or iPadOS update, you’re not alone. Apps may crash immediately, freeze on launch, show a blank white screen, or refuse to open at all straight after updating.
This is usually caused by outdated apps, low storage space, corrupted app data, Apple ID issues, or a bug in the update itself — and most of the time it can be fixed without losing any data.
Common causes of apps not working after an update
1. The app hasn’t been updated yet
Apps are built against specific versions of iOS. After a major update, older versions of an app can stop working properly until the developer releases a compatible update.
2. Not enough storage space
iOS updates can use a large amount of storage. If your iPad is nearly full, apps can fail to launch or crash unexpectedly.
3. Corrupted app data or cache
Sometimes an app’s local data doesn’t survive the update process cleanly, leading to crashes or a blank screen on launch.
4. Apple ID or App Store sign-in issues
If your iPad isn’t properly signed in, some apps can fail to verify your account and refuse to open.
5. A bug in the iOS update itself
Occasionally, the update causes the problem directly — this is more likely if many different apps are affected at once, not just one or two.
Update your apps
Open the App Store, tap your profile icon in the top right, and scroll down to see pending updates. Tap Update All.
To turn on automatic updates going forward, go to Settings → App Store and enable App Updates.
Force close and reopen the app
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause to open the app switcher.
- Find the affected app and swipe it upward to close it.
- Reopen the app from the Home Screen.
Restart your iPad
A full restart clears temporary glitches left over from the update.
Press and hold the top button (and either volume button on Face ID models) until the power-off slider appears, then slide to turn off. Wait 30 seconds, then hold the top button again to turn it back on.
Check available storage
Go to Settings → General → iPad Storage and check how much free space you have. If it’s very low, delete unused apps, photos or videos, or back them up to iCloud first.
Offload or reinstall the affected app
In Settings → General → iPad Storage, tap the app that’s not working. Choose Offload App first — this removes the app but keeps its data and documents, and often clears whatever became corrupted.
If that doesn’t help, tap Delete App and reinstall it fresh from the App Store. This is more likely to fully resolve the issue, though any data not backed up to the app’s own account or iCloud may be lost.
Check your Apple ID and App Store sign-in
Go to Settings → [your name] and confirm you’re signed in correctly. If you see a sign-in prompt or error, sign out and back in again. Also check Settings → App Store to confirm the correct Apple ID is shown there too.
Reset settings if apps still won’t work
If several apps are affected and nothing above has helped, go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPad → Reset → Reset All Settings.
This resets system settings such as Wi-Fi passwords and layout preferences back to default — it does not delete your apps, photos or files — and can clear underlying conflicts left behind by the update.
When should you get professional help?
Consider bringing your iPad in if:
- The iPad won’t complete the update at all, or gets stuck during the process
- Storage is full and you’re unable to free up space yourself
- Every app is affected, not just one or two
- The problems started after a drop, spill or other physical damage, not just the update
- The touchscreen or buttons are unreliable, making troubleshooting difficult
