Not every computer problem needs a repair shop. This cheat sheet covers the most common issues we see and what to try first — with links to our full guides where you want more detail.
| Problem | Try this first |
|---|---|
| Slow computer | Disable unnecessary startup apps, clear temp files, and check available drive space. See our guide on why your PC is running slow. |
| No internet despite Wi-Fi showing connected | Restart your router, then flush DNS. Full steps in our Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide. |
| Printer not printing | Restart the print spooler service and reinstall the driver. See our printer setup guide. |
| Blue Screen of Death | Note the stop code and update your graphics driver first. Full breakdown in our BSOD guide. |
| Windows Update keeps failing | Free up 20GB of space and run the built-in Update Troubleshooter. See our Windows Update guide. |
| Suspected virus or malware | Boot into Safe Mode and run an offline scan. Full detail in signs your PC has malware. |
| USB or external device not detected | Try a different port, update drivers, and test the device on another PC. |
| Overheating or loud fans | Clean the dust out safely — see our 10-minute PC cleaning guide. |
| Forgotten password | Do not keep guessing — see our guide on resetting a Windows password without losing data. |
When to stop troubleshooting and get help
If you have tried the quick fix and the problem keeps coming back, or you hear unusual noises from the drive or fans, it is often quicker and safer to have it looked at properly rather than risk making things worse.
