When it’s time for a new PC, one of the first decisions is whether to buy a pre-built system or have a custom build. Both are good choices. The right one depends on what matters most to you: convenience, control or budget.
Pre-built PCs: the case for
- Ready to go. Take it home, plug it in and you’re up and running the same day, with no assembly.
- Balanced by design. A well-configured pre-built has parts chosen to work well together, so you don’t need to research compatibility.
- One warranty for the whole machine. If something goes wrong, you deal with one warranty instead of working out which part is at fault.
- Great if you’re not an enthusiast. If you just want a PC that works well for gaming, work or everyday use, this is the simpler route.
Custom builds: the case for
- Exactly the specification you want. You choose every component to suit your budget and priorities: more graphics power, more storage, quieter fans, whatever matters most.
- Easier upgrades later. You know exactly what’s inside, which makes future upgrades straightforward.
- Often better value at the high end. For higher-spec systems especially, a custom build can stretch your budget further than an equivalent pre-built.
- The fun of it. Some people simply enjoy planning a system, and that’s a perfectly good reason on its own.
Which should you choose?
- Want it simple and ready to go? A pre-built is the easier, faster route.
- Want control over every part? A custom build gives you that.
- Not confident about compatibility? Start with a pre-built, and consider a custom build next time once you know the parts better.
- Somewhere in between? Choose the key components yourself and let us handle the rest: we build it, install Windows, test it and stand behind it.
Either way, quality matters
Whether you go pre-built or custom, the same rule applies. Genuine components from trusted brands, properly matched to each other, make the biggest difference to how well a PC performs and how long it lasts. The case matters too: see our guide to PC case airflow, and our graphics card buying guide if you’re building for gaming.
